Pepper, Japan’s talking, humanoid robot that reads human emotions and even tells jokes is pretty popular. It even sold out of its initial 1,000 units in one minute back in June when it went on sale. I guess not everyone loves the robot. One man showed his disdain with a swift kick to the bot. I wonder if that hurt his foot.
The drunk 60-year-old man apparently kicked a Pepper unit in Yokohama on Sunday morning after getting mad at a human store clerk in a SoftBank cell phone store. The clerk was unharmed, but the robot was wounded to the extent that it moves slower and its internal computer system might be broken too. Poor Pepper!
These robots cost 198,000 yen, or around $1,600. The guy was arrested for destruction of property of course. We don’t know if this robot was actually helping the staff, or was just on display. Either way, it was a bad day for it. Just realize that one day these robots are going to strike back when kicked.
You might want to think twice if you get mad and want to take it out on a robot. You could be the first revenge casualty. Then we would have to decide if robots can be tried for murder. What a mess.
