New app likely to help developers for HoloLens
Microsoft’s Paint app in Windows is among the most used basic tools on the platform but has long awaited a major overhaul. It seems like the Redmond-based company has finally decided to update its Paint app with some of the features that will add more utility to the tool as some leaked videos showcase the capabilities of the redesigned app.

As per the videos posted by Microsoft watcher and Twitter user WalkingCat, the “Paint Preview” app will include support for 3D objects, which was missing from earlier versions of the app. This support can prove to be extremely useful for the developers and artists who will be working on apps meant for the company’s augmented-reality platform HoloLens.

WalkingCat has since posted a download link for the preview version of the app.

The demonstration videos posted by the Twitter user show the ease with which 3D objects can be created and moved around in the workspace with the revamped Paint app. They also show the paint brushes that can be used to colour these 3D objects.
Interestingly, the videos were posted only few hours after the announcement by Microsoft that it will be unveiling the next chapter of Windows 10 on October 26 in an event in New York City.

Even though the company is expected to showcase an all-in-one PC under its Surface brand at the event, it might also unveil the revamped Paint app at the event.

WhatsApp Gets Shareable Links Feature for Group Chat Invites

Image result for WhatsApp Gets Shareable Links Feature for Group Chat InvitesWhatsApp was rumoured to bring the shareable links feature to invite new users to a group since last few months. The most widely-used messaging has now received the feature in its latest Android beta app, and it is now available to users running the beta.

The new invite feature for WhatsApp groups is available to Android users running version 2.16.281 and above. Notably, the latest beta build also brings several bug fixes. The new group link feature is also available to iOS users running version 2.16.10.

Once upgraded to the latest beta build of WhatsApp, group administrators will have the ability to add new members through shareable links. To access the new link feature, administrators will have to tap on the add participant option to get the “Invite to group via link” on top of the contacts. Once selected, the “Invite link” page will open with text reading, “Anyone with WhatsApp can follow this link to join this group. Only share it with people you trust.” WhatsApp users will get a share link alongside other options for Send link via WhatsApp, copy link, share link, and revoke link. There’s another option to get a print group QR code option where new members can just scan the QR code to join a group.
The group invite link was first reported to be in testing back in June alongside the mentions feature.

Earlier this month, WhatsApp finally enabled the mentions feature on its Android as well as iPhone app. The mention feature worked same as it does on Facebook and Twitter. Users will use “@” sign in a group chat and the app will automatically suggest names of the group members. Notably, the feature is currently limited to group chats only.

WhatsApp Tipped to Include Passcode Protection Feature for Chats

WhatsApp Tipped to Include Passcode Protection Feature for Chats

  • WhatsApp may enable passcode protection for chats
  • The feature may be optional
  • The feature was spotted in translation requests sent by WhatsApp

WhatsApp implemented end-to-end encryption across all platforms earlier this year. If a new report is to be believed then the world’s most popular instant messaging app with over 1 billion users may add a passcode protection feature for chats soon.

Android Authority has been tipped about the purported six-digit passcode protection feature. The feature was spotted in WhatsApp translation requests, which are text strings sent by the company to volunteers to translate UI and other text, and if real, can indicate the company is working to add passcode protection.

Some of the phrases reported include “Enter the current six-digit passcode”, “Passcodes don’t match. Try again”, and “Enter a recovery email address”. The translated phrases indicate that users may get a recovery mail option in case they forget their six-digit passcode. The report further adds that the use of a recovery mail may be kept only as an option. This sounds slightly strange considering an email is required in case users lock their accounts. At this moment, it is not clear whether WhatsApp will keep the option to add six-digit passcode feature a compulsory or optional feature.

In the past, leaked translation requests have been a reliable indicator of upcoming features on WhatsApp. So far however, there has been no confirmation about the rollout of the passcode feature from WhatsApp. The move to add passcodes to protect chats seems the next step to enhance messaging experience on WhatsApp as it already support full encryption on all platforms.

Recently, WhatsApp finally enabled the mention feature on its Android as well as iPhone apps. The mention feature works same as it does on Facebook and Twitter. Users will have to use “@” sign in a group chat and the app will automatically suggest names of the group members. Notably, the feature is currently limited to group chats only.

Chrome Gets Inbuilt Google Cast Support; No Extension Required

Chrome Gets Inbuilt Google Cast Support; No Extension Required

  • The feature was tested for eight months
  • It is available in the latest version of Chrome
  • People have used Google Cast more than 38 million times in the last month

After testing it for eight months, Google has announced that it has now built Google Cast right into Chrome. Users will no longer have to install a separate extension to beam videos from a webpage to other screens like their TV.

In January, Google employee Francois Beaufort announced that the Chromium team was testing this feature in the beta channel. He credited the new Media Router for making it possible to build Cast natively. Now, the feature has been rolled out into the stable Chrome channel for everyone to use.

For all the websites that support Cast, an icon will appear when you’re on the same network as a Chromecast device. Clicking on the icon will allow you to choose the home device that you want to project the stream on – be it audio speakers, or see a web video on TV.

For all the websites that are not integrated with Cast, just head to the Chrome menu, select ‘Cast’ from there, and follow the steps to beam the video on your TV. The tech giant informs that only the latest version of Chrome supports the integrated Cast feature.

The Google Cast extension for Chrome was launched in 2013, alongside the Chromecast dongle. Until now users had to download and install Google Cast Chrome extension to stream music, videos, and other webpages from the browser to their Chromecast-connected TV. However, this native support of Cast eliminates this installation process.

Google claims that users have casted more than 38 million times from Chrome in the last month itself. In July, users has watched and heard more than 50 million hours of content through Chromecast.

Google introduced its second-generation Chromecast dongle and the new Chromecast Audio dongle in India in April this year, and priced both at Rs. 3,399. The media-streaming dongles are available on several online marketplaces including Flipkart, Snapdeal, Paytm, as well as offline retailers like Reliance Digital and Croma. Google claims that it managed to sell 5 million Chromecast devices in the last two months itself.

WhatsApp Web Security Flaw Can Affect Up to 200 Million Users

A newly found vulnerability in WhatsApp Web, the Web-based interface of the popular instant messaging client, allows attackers to trick users into executing arbitrary code on their computers, a security firm reports. The vulnerability affects more than 200 million people who use WhatsApp Web. WhatsApp has since updated its Web client to patch the bug in the latest version.

The ‘MaliciousCard’ vulnerability can be exploited by simply sending a vCard contact card containing malicious code to a victim’s account, reports security firm Check Point. Once the victim opens the alleged contact, it starts to distribute bots, ransomware, and other malware files.

Since the business contact card looks perfectly legitimate, it is impossible for a user to know if the contact is riddled with malicious code.

The security firm noted that it informed WhatsApp about the vulnerability, and the messaging service issued an update on August 21 that fixes the bug. WhatsApp Web v0.1.4481 or later are not affected with the vulnerability.

The vulnerability lies in the improper filtering of contact cards sent in the vCard format in older versions of WhatsApp. The attacker can inject a command in the name attribute of the vCard file, separated by the ampersand character. Windows would automatically try to run all lines in the code. It is not known whether Mac users are affected by the vulnerability.

WhatsApp fails to validate the vCard format and the contents of the file, the firm further noted. One could send an executable file and WhatsApp wouldn’t be able to flag or block it.

WhatsApp, which is available across multiple platforms, recently announced that it reached 900 million monthly active users. WhatsApp Web, which offers several of the mobile app’s functionalities including the ability to send and receive text and audio notes, is used by more than 200 million users.

Jawbone responds to Up activity tracker criticisms with software update

Jawbone Up2, Up3

Jawbone has issued the first major software update for its Up line of activity trackers to address some of the issues that people have had with the wearables.

The updates released Tuesday will help resolve some of the problems users have experienced with the Up2, Up3 and Up4, wrote Mimi Huggins, [cq] Jawbone’s public relations manager, in an email.

An over-the-air firmware update via either the Android or iOS Up smartphone apps will allow the Up3 and Up4 to collect what Jawbone calls “passive heart rate” data.

Currently, those devices only gather “resting heart rate,” which Jawbone defines as the number of times a heart beats when a person is completely at rest, particularly during sleep.

Some critics viewed the Up’s ability to measure only rest heart rate as a drawback.

Passive heart rate information, by comparison, will be gathered periodically during the day when a person is still, Jawbone said Tuesday.

How often the devices measure passive heart rate depends on a person’s daily activities, Huggins said.

According to Jawbone, capturing both heart readings gives people a more complete view of their health via the Smart Coach feature, which provides people with wellness advice based on the collected data.

The update will also let the Up2, Up3 and Up4 automatically detect when a person falls asleep and wakes up. Previously, users had to tap on the devices twice to switch from day mode to the sleep tracking setting. People’s sleeping patterns will automatically appear in the Up app after the tracker syncs with a smartphone.

The software update is being rolled out to customers now, Jawbone said.

Beyond software, the Up2 and Up3 are also getting a style makeover. The Up2 has been redesigned and now has two thin straps instead of a flat strap to secure the tracker to a person’s wrist. Some reviewers panned the Up2’s clasp, saying it was difficult to secure.

The Up2 will come in six new colors, five of which feature the new strap. Meanwhile, the Up3 is being offered in four new colors.

The prices for the wearables remain the same: the Up2 sells for US$99 and the Up3 for $179. The Up4 is $199.

The Up2 lacks some of the sensors found in the other Up models, preventing the device from tracking a person’s heart rate. The Up3 and Up4 have similar functions, but the latter lets people make payments using NFC (near field communication).
